Well, I would guess if you’re reading this you have the same problem that I do. I can let you know also that we are not the only ones with memory problems. I can also share with you that there is help for people like us and I’ve learned a couple of tricks along the way that have helped me. I really think they will help you, also.

If you have been researching this topic for a while already then you’ve probably heard people mention that the brain is like a muscle. Well, when I was growing up that was usually considered to be something of an insult. I guess it was said more about jocks, or athletes, as a way of insulting their intelligence by implying that they had more muscle between your ears then brain.

Although that can not be literally true I do have to admit that if I were honest I would have to say that my brain used to occasionally function as if there were more muscle between my ears than brain. I had so many memory problems it seemed like it was going to drive me crazy with frustration.

I really was blessed in that I’ve never really had that problem which is frequently mentioned on the Internet about misplacing keys and wallets. Maybe it’s a male thing, one of the blessings of being a male maybe, but when I wear pants they always have pockets and that’s where my keys and wallet go. If I have pants on then my keys and wallet are with me. It’s that simple.

Nevertheless I had ongoing memory problems and I knew it. Complex instructions given to me as a part of running my business seem to be almost impossible at times to grasp. By the time I got to the end of considering eventualities I had forgotten the first part of our discussion. It was really frustrating.

I really don’t know exactly when the problem with my short-term memory began. In my case it probably had a lot to do with the level of negative stress within my life. While I did not know why I had the problem I did know that I had to do something constructive about it, and quickly.

One of the tools that I learned to use in order to stretch my mind was a simple act that anyone can use effectively. I have to admit that not being a doctor I cannot say that someone suffering a brain injury would profit from this trek as well but it sure does work for me and I suspect that it would work for a lot of other people as well.

This is a quick and easy trick but it’s also very effective. I simply take a photograph from our family photo album and study it for a few minutes. After a few minutes I set it aside and then write out as many details as I can remember about the photograph. Occasionally I use black and white pictures, yes I am that old, but color pictures can add an additional challenge as we try to remember not only specific details but also colors. To expand this trick as your memory gets better simply lessen the time during which you allow yourself to study the photograph. Works like a charm. Hope you have fun with it.
